WELCOME TO ART
Art class is an opportunity for students to express themselves in new and exciting ways. Art is a visual medium that enlists the senses and emotions of the artist to convey personal ideas. It is an important way for students to think abstractly, problem solve and develop the creativity which they find so fulfilling.
We will be following a Discipline Based Art Curriculum which explores art practice, art history, art criticism and aesthetics. For a student's self-expression to be conveyed in aesthetically successful ways, art media require instruction in tools, materials and skills. Drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, jewelry, fibers, mixed media and design projects will be explored. Traditional subject matter will include still lives, landscapes, portraiture and genre scenes. The elements of art and principles of design will be studied. Lessons are sequenced developmentally for each grade level.
When I hear students say, "This is so satisfying," or when I hear them begin to sing while they work, both expressions tell me that art has supplied them with the peace and wonder human beings crave in life. Please support your child by asking them to explain their work and comment on what you observe in it. Many middle school students are developing a quiet outward awareness of what art means in their lives. Some already recognize this will be their future career as an architect, industrial designer, art teacher, graphic designer, interior designer, film maker, fashion designer, photographer, visual artist or in a field tangential to visual art. Please support their gifts and desires.
I look forward to working with your children. This will be an exciting year, filled with exploration. I may be reached at [email protected].
Sincerely,
Carol Mack, B.A., M.A., J.D.
